Common Weeknight Dinner Mistake #10: Relying on Willpower
|
|
If youâre waiting to feel motivated to cook after a long day⊠you might be waiting a while.
Most nights, youâll be tired, hungry, and low on decision-making energy. Thatâs not a flawâitâs life. And itâs exactly why willpower isnât a reliable strategy.
Instead of asking, âWill I have the energy to cook tonight?â
Try: âWhat would I actually look forward to eating?â
Because that shift changes everything.
Not in a âlet me try a brand-new, complicated recipeâ kind of wayâbut in a "that sounds so good right now" way.
|
Maybe itâs a comforting bowl of pasta. A juicy burger. Or a homemade poutine.
Can you make a version that feels easy, satisfying, and a little excitingâno recipe required, or with components ready to go?
Thatâs not willpower. Thatâs a system.
And the best systems make the easy choice the enjoyable oneâso you donât have to rely on motivation to eat well.
Thatâs exactly what I aim to help you build here each week: meals that are simple, flexible, and genuinely crave-worthyâso you donât have to rely on motivation to meet your healthy eating goals!

The Secret to Better Meals? Homemade Sauces!!
That jar of Alfredo in your fridge? Super convenientâbut itâs also one of the easiest things to make yourself.
Most homemade sauces come together in under 10 minutes with simple ingredients like milk, garlic, flour and butter. No long ingredient list, no preservatives⊠and no half-used jar getting moldy and forgotten in the back of the fridge đŹ
Store-bought sauces can quietly add sodium, sugar, and saturated fat to your meals. When you make it yourself, you can easily sneak in more nutritionâthink fibre, sneaking in extra veggies, and flavour without relying on heavy cream.

And like everything else, consider making a big batch and freeze extras for later!
đ Iâll be teaching exactly how to make these homemade sauces (pesto, tomato, and a creamy sauceâwith a healthy twist!) at my upcoming From Scratch: Fresh Pasta & Sauces Workshop on May 9th, 1-4pm.

Don't Wait to Until You're Hungry to Eat
You donât have to earn your meals by feeling hungry first. There, I said it.
Eating when youâre not physically hungry doesnât make you âbadââit makes you human.
Because hunger isnât just physical.
đ Sometimes itâs mouth hunger (that âthis looks so goodâ feeling).
đ©” Heart hunger (seeking comfort, connection, or a break).
â° Practical hunger (you know itâs lunchtime and you wonât have time to eat later).
All of those are valid reasons food might be calling your name...
The key isnât to ignore itâitâs to understand it. A quick check-in can go a long way: Whatâs driving my desire to eat right now?
- Am I low on energy?
- Looking for comfort?
- Just excited about whatâs available?
Thereâs no right or wrong answerâbut that awareness helps you respond in a way that actually satisfies you.
Because eating isnât just about reacting to hunger. Itâs about meeting your needsâwhatever they may be in that moment.
As always, if you have any questions or need any additional support, feel free to hit reply, I'd love to connect.
Stay well,
